There’s something about fall that just wraps your heart up in warmth. The crisp air, cozy sweaters, and, of course, the comforting smells that make you want to snuggle up with a warm cup of cider. For me, scents are what truly make a house a home, and nothing fills a space with that same feeling of comfort like the sweet, spicy smell of cinnamon.

I grew up in New England where fall isn’t just a season—it’s a sensory experience. While spring is hands-down my favorite time of year for the fresh blooms and new life, fall takes the cake when it comes to smells. Let me tell you, there is absolutely nothing that smells bad in a New England autumn—not a single thing. As much as we LOVE Texas we absolutely miss New England smells.

Growing up, natural scents were just part of the rhythm of life. Simmer pots bubbling on the stove, raw incense (not the chemical-filled stuff that’s everywhere now), cinnamon brooms hanging by the entryway, and the faint sweetness of cloves in the air. Whether I was at home or visiting my grandmother, these smells were a constant, and they brought with them a feeling of safety, warmth, and tradition.

Now, as an adult, I carry those same traditions into my own home. My husband always says that these natural sprays, simmer pots, cinnamon brooms, and simple DIYs are a huge part of what makes our house our home. Between those scents, our seasonal decorations, and the time we spend together, it all weaves into the tapestry of what makes our little space feel so special.

Today, I’m sharing one of my absolute favorite ways to add a natural, fall-inspired fragrance to your home: DIY Cinnamon Spray. It’s easy, affordable, and made with simple, natural ingredients. No harsh chemicals, no artificial fragrances—just pure, cozy goodness in a bottle. Let’s make your house smell like the heart of fall, year-round.

Why You’ll Love This DIY Cinnamon Spray

If you’ve ever walked down the air freshener aisle at the store, you know how overwhelming it can be—rows of synthetic sprays, plug-ins, and candles filled with unpronounceable ingredients. Many of those “fresh” scents come with harsh chemicals, artificial fragrances, and plastic waste that you just don’t want in your home. That’s where this DIY cinnamon spray comes in: a natural, cozy alternative that’s good for your home, your family, and your wallet.

Safe & Natural

One of the best parts about this spray is its simplicity. Made with only natural ingredients, it’s free of the synthetic chemicals and toxins often found in store-bought fresheners. Instead of filling your air with artificial scents, you’re using cinnamon and optional vanilla essential oils—both of which come straight from nature.

  • Family-Friendly: No worrying about what’s in the air your little ones or pets are breathing. This spray is safe for kids, pets, and anyone sensitive to harsh chemicals.

  • Eco-Conscious: Skip the aerosol cans and plastic-heavy packaging—this DIY recipe uses reusable glass spray bottles, reducing waste and keeping your home eco-friendly.

There’s something so satisfying about knowing exactly what’s in the products you’re using around your family. Simple, clean, and natural—it’s the kind of homemaking that just feels right.

Budget-Friendly

Have you ever added up the cost of store-bought room sprays, candles, and plug-ins? It can get expensive fast—especially if you’re like me and love having a good scent flowing through the house at all times. This DIY cinnamon spray costs just pennies to make, and chances are you already have most of the ingredients on hand: baking soda, water, and essential oils.

  • Pantry Staples: There’s no need for a big shopping list—these are ingredients you probably already have stocked in your kitchen or DIY cabinet.

  • Long-Lasting: A little goes a long way! With just a few drops of essential oil, you can make a full bottle of spray that will last you weeks.

  • Better Than Store-Bought: Not only does this recipe save you money, but it gives you a natural, high-quality fragrance without the markup of fancy brands.

Who says cozy, welcoming homes have to cost a fortune? This spray is proof that simple solutions are often the best ones.

Year-Round Cozy Vibes

While cinnamon is the ultimate fall scent—it’s warm, spicy, and oh-so comforting—this spray is perfect for creating a cozy atmosphere year-round.

  • Fall Magic: Use it to set the tone for crisp mornings, cozy evenings, and all the autumn vibes you could ever want. It’s like wrapping your home in a warm blanket.

  • Winter Comfort: Cinnamon pairs beautifully with holiday decorations, making your house feel festive and inviting when the temperatures drop.

  • Everyday Charm: Even in spring and summer, a light spritz of cinnamon spray can add subtle warmth to any room. Pair it with fresh flowers or greenery for a balanced, homey scent.

No matter the season, this spray creates that “lived-in, loved-in” feeling that truly makes a house feel like home.

Quick & Easy to Make

If you’re anything like me, you love a good DIY project—but only if it’s simple and doesn’t take up your whole day. This recipe comes together in just five minutes with only a handful of ingredients, making it the perfect go-to when you want your home to smell amazing without a ton of effort.

  • No Fancy Tools Required: All you need is a spray bottle, water, baking soda, and essential oils. If you’re missing cinnamon oil, I even shared a homemade version you can whip up on the stovetop!

  • Customizable: Adjust the strength of the scent to suit your preference. Add a little vanilla for a touch of sweetness, or mix in a drop of clove or nutmeg for even more depth.

  • Always Fresh: Because this recipe comes together so quickly, you can make a fresh batch anytime you need it. No more half-empty bottles of store-bought sprays sitting around collecting dust.

For me, this cinnamon spray is more than just a way to freshen up a room—it’s a little piece of tradition, a nod to simpler times when homes were filled with natural scents instead of chemicals. It’s the smell of cozy afternoons spent with family, fall evenings wrapped in a blanket, and the feeling of walking into a space that’s warm, inviting, and full of heart.

So whether you’re spritzing it in your living room, on your pillows, or near your front door, this DIY cinnamon spray is a reminder that the simplest things often make the biggest impact.

Give it a try, and I promise—it’ll quickly become part of the little routines that make your house feel like home.

What You’ll Need

Here’s what you’ll need to whip up your cozy, cinnamon-scented spray:

  • 1 cup Distilled Water – Provides a clean base and prevents impurities from affecting your spray.

  • ¾ teaspoon Baking Soda – Helps disperse the essential oils evenly and neutralizes odors.

  • 15 drops Cinnamon Essential Oil – The star of the show, bringing that warm, spicy scent we all know and love.

  • 10 drops Vanilla Essential Oil (Optional) – Adds a sweet, subtle undertone that pairs perfectly with cinnamon.

  • 1 oz. witch hazel or vodka - Helps disperse the essential oils evenly and neutralizes odors.

  • Glass Spray Bottle – A reusable glass bottle is best since essential oils can break down plastic over time. (For this batch I would recommend using this size bottle)

Don’t have cinnamon essential oil? No worries! I’ll share how to make your own cinnamon-infused oil below.

How to Make DIY Cinnamon Spray

Follow these quick and easy steps to create a natural cinnamon fragrance that’ll fill your home with cozy vibes:

  • Add Baking Soda: Start by adding ¾ teaspoon of baking soda to your spray bottle. This step is key because the baking soda will help distribute the essential oils throughout the water.

  • Add Witch Hazel OR Vodka: Add 1 oz. of witch hazel or vodka to your spray bottle. This step is also key because the witch hazel or vodka further help distribute the essential oils throughout the water.

  • Add https://www.pntrs.com/t/2-363293-311080-178443Essential Oils: Add 7 drops of cinnamon essential oil and 5 drops of vanilla essential oil (if you’re using it).

  • Pour in Distilled Water: Carefully pour 1 cup of distilled water into the spray bottle.

  • Shake It Up: Screw on the lid and give the bottle a good shake. This helps mix everything together.

  • Spray & Enjoy: Test the spray on a small area first (avoid delicate fabrics like silk or suede), then spritz away!

Pro Tip: Shake the bottle before each use since essential oils naturally separate over time. My favorite place to get all my essential oils is Plant Therapy! And at the time of writing this post if you sign up for email alerts you can get $10 off $25+. I highly recommend checking them out.

How to Make Homemade Cinnamon Oil (If You Don’t Have Essential Oil)

If you don’t have cinnamon essential oil on hand, you can easily make a homemade infused oil rather than an essential oil:

Ingredients:

Instructions:

  • Combine the carrier oil and ground cinnamon in a small saucepan.

  • Heat the mixture on low for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Don’t let it boil!

  • Remove from heat and let the mixture cool.

  • Strain the oil through a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth to remove the cinnamon particles.

  • Store the oil in a clean, glass jar.

Now you have a homemade cinnamon oil ready to use for your DIY spray!

to fill your home with the inviting scent of cinnamon:

  • Living Room: Spritz this spray on pillows, throw blankets, and curtains for an instant fall vibe. There’s nothing quite like curling up on the couch with a good book or your favorite movie while being surrounded by the comforting scent of cinnamon. Bonus Tip: Spray a little near the vents—when the heat kicks on, the scent will carry throughout the room!

  • Kitchen: Neutralize lingering cooking odors (looking at you, garlic and fish!) while adding a warm, delicious cinnamon fragrance. A quick spray after cleaning up the kitchen makes everything feel fresh, cozy, and ready for your next home-cooked meal.

  • Bedrooms: Lightly mist your sheets, pillows, or even curtains to create a restful and cozy atmosphere. The subtle scent of cinnamon can help you unwind after a long day and adds that “snug as a bug” feeling, especially in cooler months. Just be sure to avoid delicate fabrics like silk!

  • Bathrooms: Keep your bathrooms smelling fresh and clean with a few spritzes of this natural air freshener. It’s a chemical-free alternative to harsh store-bought sprays and adds a hint of warmth to what’s often the coldest room in the house.

  • Entryways: Welcome guests the moment they walk through your door with the nostalgic and cozy scent of cinnamon. A quick spray near your entryway or on decorative wreaths can set the perfect tone for fall (or any season, really). It’s like saying, “Come on in and make yourself at home.”

  • Workspace: If you’re working from home or tackling projects at your desk, a little cinnamon spray can lift the atmosphere and keep you focused. Cinnamon is naturally stimulating, so it can help boost your mood and energy levels while reducing stress.

Tips for Long-Lasting Results

To make sure your DIY cinnamon spray stays fresh and works its magic for as long as possible, follow these simple tips:

  • Store it Properly: Keep your spray bottle in a cool, dark place when not in use. This prevents the essential oils from degrading and keeps the scent vibrant. A cabinet or pantry shelf works perfectly.

  • Shake Before Each Use: Essential oils naturally separate from water over time. Give the bottle a good shake before every spray to evenly distribute the ingredients.

  • Adjust the Strength: Love a stronger cinnamon scent? Add an extra drop or two of essential oil. Prefer a lighter fragrance? Cut back on the cinnamon oil and use more vanilla or water to soften the blend.

  • Protect Delicate Fabrics: While this spray is safe for most surfaces, essential oils can stain delicate materials like silk or suede. Always test the spray on an inconspicuous area first, and avoid using it on surfaces that could absorb oils.

  • Refresh Often: Because this is a natural spray without preservatives, its scent may fade more quickly than synthetic alternatives. A quick spritz here and there will keep your home smelling fresh and cozy throughout the day.

This DIY cinnamon spray is more than just a natural air freshener—it’s a little piece of fall magic that transforms your home into a cozy haven. Whether you’re using it for everyday warmth or setting the mood for fall gatherings, the sweet, spicy scent of cinnamon is sure to fill your heart (and home) with comfort.

It’s traditions like these—simple, natural, and meaningful—that make a house truly feel like home. So grab your ingredients, whip up a batch, and let your home wrap you in that warm, cinnamon-scented hug.
